ΤHE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION of the Greek Community of
Naples and Campania in collaboration with scientific institutions
in Cyprus presents the destruction of the cultural heritage
in the northern part of Cyprus after the Turkish invasion
of 1974, which resulted in the occupation of 36.2% of the island.
Cyprus, a member state of the European Union, is a floating
museum of history and cultural heritage, which dates back at
least 9.000 years ago.
The Occupation Regime expelled from their ancestral
homes 200.000 indigenous inhabitants, changed the historical,
Greek toponyms of Cyprus, installed hundreds of thousands
of settlers from Anatolia, in order to change the demography
of the island and installed 45.000 Turkish soldiers. Finally, it
has proceeded to an unprecedented on purpose destruction of
the ancient Greek and religious cultural heritage. Thousands
of icons, fragments of mosaics and frescoes, manuscripts and
works of art were looted and sold illegally to foreign markets.
At the same time, cemeteries were leveled and every kind of of
religious freedom and human rights were violated.
The exhibition is divided into the following sections:
1 The registration of looted monuments of the religious communities
of Cyprus (Orthodox, Armenian, Maronite, Jewish,
Roman Catholic, Protestant).
2 The issue of destruction of the ancient and religious cultural heritage
of Cyprus.
3 The issue of the various uses of religious monuments by the
Occupation regime.
4 The issue of repatriation and restoration of artworks and
renovation of monuments.
The title of the exhibition has its references to the characteristic
red signs with the inscription “FORBIDDEN ZONE”,
which the Turkish army has posted on many points, such as
in Famagusta. This exhibition protests against the “prohibition
of memory”, as well as against the erection of any “walls” and
bans among peoples, ideas, cultures and religions.
